I meet with parents (and youth) to review and more deeply understand the results and diagnoses from their psychological assessment report(s). I explain technical language around information processing (e.g., language, nonverbal or visual skills, memory, processing speed, attention, executive functioning, etc.), academic learning, behaviour, emotion regulation and social interactions and how the youth may be impacted across different contexts (i.e., school, home, ‘everyday’ life and relationships, and perhaps in therapy). We discuss how to build on the youth’s strengths and how to support areas of challenge. The increased awareness helps to build empathy for the youth and supports ongoing advocacy.
